N.Y. remembers Battle of Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, New York - September 9, 2010

A weekend-long festival honoring the Battle of Plattsburgh is underway.

A memorial service was held Thursday evening at Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh. American and British troops killed during the battle are buried there. It is one of only two sites where American and British soldiers killed during the war are buried side by side. The Battle of Plattsburgh was a turning point in the War of 1812. American ships defeated the British Navy on Lake Champlain.

"They were combatants at war, but they are in fact friends and have been since, and they are together at peace. That's the way we like to place this," said Keith Herkalo of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association.

More events are planned throughout the weekend. Click here for more information.
