Burlington College to move in 2011

Burlington, Vermont - November 8, 2010

Big real estate changes are underway in Burlington's Old North End. Burlington College will soon have a new home and the school has now found an owner for its old home.

"We decided that we wanted to sell this building which is a historic building, in the old North End, to an agency that represents the best of the Old North End that continues to serve the community, and COTS is certainly one," said Jane O'Meara Sanders with Burlington College.

The Committee on Temporary Shelter, or COTS, has agreed to buy the Burlington College building for 1.2 million dollars. COTS will move its administrative offices, family services program and housing resource center into the North Avenue property. The college will be relocating up the street at the historic Roman Catholic Diocese building, which it purchased for an undisclosed price.

We will be moving entirely out of this building in May, until then classes for the Spring semester, we'll be having classes here," O'Meara Sanders said. The college will be able to rapidly expand from 16,000 square feet of current space to more than 77-thousand. They'll have larger classrooms and a campus green after renovations to the diocese property. "We anticipate probably about 2 million dollars worth of renovations over time, and more beautification as time goes on."

The college will pay for the purchase and renovation with a combination of private donations and federal grants. School officials though were reluctant to tell WCAX exactly where the money is coming from or how much more they will need. "You don't say what the amount of the capital campaign is, before you actually announce it, so, I'll keep you posted," O'Meara Sanders said.

Burlington college's current enrollment is just over 210 students. Their goal, with the new expansion, is to expand to 400 students by the end of 2015.
