Co. gets 65 extra days to complete NY-Vt. bridge

CROWN POINT, N.Y. (AP) - New York state transportation officials have granted the company building the new Lake Champlain Bridge another 65 days to complete the project, if needed.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carol Breen says Thursday there were delays while Boulder, Colo.-based Flatiron Construction was drilling footings for bridge piers to support the span that will connect Crown Point and Addison, Vt.

She says plans still call for opening the bridge to traffic by Oct. 9.

Breen says crews struck an unidentified obstruction during the drilling. She says it could have been a piece of the old bridge demolished last December, an old shipwreck or a large rock. Breen says this winter's severe weather also caused delays.

Breen says the delays could increase the $70 million cost of the project.

The time adjustment was first reported by Vermont Public Radio.
