Teens design airplane wings for Cessna and Boeing

Burlington, Vermont – March 10, 2011

Teenagers are pushing learning to the next level by designing airplane wings for Boeing and Cessna.

It's called the Real World Design Challenge. High schools around the country form teams and compete in the annual competition increasing science and engineering education. This year the challenge was to design a more energy efficient 737 aircraft wing. Students first compete at the state level then the winner moves on to nationals in Washington, D.C.

Two members of the winning team from Vermont appeared on The :30. Jonathan Girard and Neharika Khandavalli are juniors at South Burlington High School.

Both students had been on winning teams in prior years. "It does seem pretty hard at first," said Girard," But both of us had a couple years experience."

"Our team is basically made up of people who excel in different things," said Khandavalli.
