Men's roller derby gains momentum

Burlington, Vermont - March 13, 2011

Vermont's one and only men's roller derby team had a bout Sunday.

The Bomb Quads are the Burlington Bomber's men's team and were playing a team from Utica, New York. More commonly known as a women's sport, roller derby is one of the fastest growing games in the United States with over 600 teams across the country.

"There's been an explosion of women's teams around the country over the past 10 years and then around 2006 a men's team formed just a little south of here in Southampton, Massachusetts called the Dirty Dozen," said Eric Peterson, a Bomb Quad member.

"We just kind of took to it and its slowly growing but it's getting bigger every passing month -- it seems there's new teams popping up. It's just fun to skate out there and really plow into people. You don't get to do that in real life," said Paul Laporte, a member of the visiting team from New York.
