Winooski, Vermont -- February 6, 2004
A milestone Thursday in the city of Winooski where some construction officially started on the city's huge and long-awaited redevelopment project.Winooski's big dig got underway Thursday and the Governor was here about two hours ago to kick it all off. Governor Douglas got the word from federal officials around noon Thursday on a central financial aspect and he rushed to Winooski to share it with the city.
Governor Douglas personally delivered the good news about a federal loan approving an essential $24 million loan guarantee for the $175 million Winooski Redevelopment Project.
The loans guarantee means that the redevelopment project will start in about eight weeks, on April 15. The project includes plans for more than 600 units of mixed housing, a one thousand space parking garage, and dramatic increases in retail and business space. Still needed is state approval of another 25 million dollar loan guarantee, which state officials say is close to final approval.
