Chechen Rebel Gets Asylum in Vermont

Arlington, Vermont   August 6, 2004

An official from the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya has won political asylum in the United States and is living in Vermont.

Ilyas Akhmadov  was appointed foreign minister in 1999 by the Chechen rebel leader and president. Akhmadov came to this state two years ago, living with friends near Arlington. He was first granted asylum about four months ago, despite the objections of the Russians who consider Akhmadov a terrorist. The US government says he is no terrorist.

This week, the department of Homeland Security gave final approval to the request for asylum.  The Russians said this asylum could affect relations between the two countries.
