Stowe, Vermont - February 14, 2005
A fatal skiing accident Monday in Stowe. A skier was killed when he fell off a Mount Mansfield cliff while making an extreme-skiing movie.
Rescue crews recovered the body Monday evening. Police say the victim was one of four members of a film crew skiing in rocky, wooded terrain outside the boundaries of the nearby Stowe Mountain Resort.
"They were skiing off-trail here at Stowe and they came down a chute. They were actually filming for extreme-skiing. One of the skiers came down the chute and stopped at the end and I guess what they said is a slough came which is kind of like a small avalanche of sorts and ended up pushing the skier that was at the bottom off the hill over a cliff," explained Vt. State Police Sgt. Ed Meslin.
The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Alec Stall of Stowe. Police say he recently moved to Vermont from his native New York. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death. The other three men were not injured.
