High Winds Cause Havoc

Burlington, Vermont - October 28, 2006

Extreme winds caused damage in spots across our region Saturday.

In Richford, fire crews were called to Main Street where a building was blown to pieces. They say the building was under construction and couldn't withstand the windy weather. Main street was closed for more than an hour while crews cleaned up the mess.

Toppled trees and downed power lines were also reported in spots across the region, including Jericho, where some roads were blocked off by falling trees.

Central Vermont Public Service says about 8,000 customers lost power at the peak of the storm. By late Saturday about 800 customers - primarily in Middlebury and Bradford area were still in the dark. Some customers will have to wait until Sunday until their lights are back on.

Washington Electric Cooperative says up to 620 customers lost power with the worst damage reported in Plainfield.

Other utilities in Vermont and New York reported scattered outages.
