White River Junction, Vermont - May 18, 2007
Young artists who were "Drawn Here" for training in the comic book industry graduate Saturday, May 19th.
It's the first commencement at the Center for Cartoon Studies, a two year art school in the Upper Valley. The graduates will hear a speech from Patrick McDonnell. He's a New Jersey-based cartoonist whose strip "Mutts," starring dogs and cats, appears in 700 newspapers, including the Sunday edition of The Valley News.
Patrick McDonnell says, "Nowadays, there are so many different opportunities to tell stories with words and pictures, with the graphic novels getting so popular, and comic books, and animation. What's so exciting is there are so many ways they can go with their talent."
The "Mutts" creator says he will tell the graduates to persevere, because cartooning can be a tough industry to break into.
Our special thanks to Channel 3's photography and editing staff, who worked so hard on our week-long series on cartooning.
