Clinton Predicts Peace & Prosperity

Middlebury, Vermont - May 27, 2007

Former President Bill Clinton was in Vermont this weekend to deliver the commencement speech at Middlebury College.

608 graduates of the upscale liberal arts college won't forget who the commencement speaker was. Clinton arrived with the usual advice for the graduates, spiced with a dose of science and politics. He said the end of his presidency coincided with a great scientific discovery, the mapping of the human genome in 2000.

"A lot of great things have happened," he said. "We've found the marker for breast cancer, we're getting closer with Alzheimer's, Parkinsons. But the most important thing I learned was that genetically, all human beings are 99-point-nine percent the same."

Commencement at Middlebury included some humor as well. Clinton gave his version of an encounter with his most prominent critic on talk radio. "I met Rush Limbaugh the other night in New York, and I was tempted after all the terrible things he said about me to tell him we were 99-point-nine percent the same," Clinton said, drawing laughter from the audience. "I was afraid the poor man would run weeping from the restaurant, and so I let it go."

Clinton said the great problems of the world, including genocide and terrorism, stem from a tendency to focus on the one-tenth of one percent instead of the overwhelming common basis of humanity. But he said he expects a much brighter future.

"I believe you will live in the most interesting, peaceful, prosperous time the world has ever known. Even if we have to deal with terror for a few more decades, they're going to have to really work to kill as many innocent people as were killed from political violence in the 20th century," he said.
