Cookin' Up Some Tasty Racks

Lake Placid, New York - July 2, 2007

Lots of hungry people were in Lake Placid, New York this weekend, hoping to fill up at a festival that's all about the barbeque.

The "I Love Barbecue" competition has proven to be a hit with the public and the contestants. As proof, the numbers taking part in the two-day event have doubled in just one year, from 16 to 36.

People taking part have hauled barbecues across the United States and Canada to be here. Each bringing with them a special flavor of their area.

"In Texas you have the sweet bourbon style barbecue, the Carolinas have different styles within the state with a ketchup, mustard, vinegar base," said event spokesman John Lundine.

Some of the contestants here have invested thousands of dollars in cooking hardware to get the most out of the ribs they serve up. But according to Ted Lorson of Norwich, Connecticut, anyone with a hankering to compete here can get away with spending a lot less.

"We came with two Webber smokers which cost $200 each, a $79 pop-up tent, couple of tables and some charcoal. We took third place with the big shots. You can do it.

Lost Nation, a barbecue team from Essex Junction, Vermont, cooked up first place.

Everyone here thinks that on Saturday some kind of barbecued rib eating record was set. The public bought and consumed over 4,000 tasty ribs in just one hour.

There has been no mention of how much the sale of Alka Seltzer went up after that.
