Museum Showcases Shoes

Burlington, Vermont - September 10, 2007

UVM hopes museum-goers will beat feet to a new exhibit. The show is dedicated to historical footwear.

The Fleming Museum's permanent collection includes hundreds of pairs of shoes. Many were donated by the descendents of their owners, others were collected by scholars and tourists. Now some of those shoes are on view in a display called "Heel to Toe."

The museum says shoes can help trace our cultural history, reminding us of ceremonies, changing trends, and differences in social status.

The Fleming Museum's Margaret Tamulonis says, "We have shoes from the 1970s here, the 1960s, in a case next to shoes from the 1860s. And I think it's interesting to see trends that reflected how people might have perceived how women or children might have moved around in a society, or shoes that reflect what kinds of events were important to people. For example, we have pairs of wedding shoes in the collections."

The exhibit includes a pair of shoe buckles that belonged to one of the founders of this state, and of UVM, Ira Allen.

"Heel to Toe" is open at the Fleming Museum through mid-December.
