Rutland, Vermont - November 1, 2007
A Rutland man is dead following a stabbing Thursday afternoon in a downtown parking lot. The victim was stabbed in the neck and bled to death as witnesses tried to help him.
The stabbing happened in broad daylight in the center of Rutland's downtown between Wal-mart and the train station. Police were called to the parking lot after receiving reports of a stabbing. They found 24-year-old John Baptie with what they describe as a severe laceration. Witnesses were giving him first aid. An ambulance took Baptie to the Rutland Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Police have identified a suspect. They say 23-year-old Jonathan Bruno had run from the scene to a nearby house. The home owner called police. Witnesses told the police that the victim and the suspect knew each other and were in a dispute.
Rutland Police have not released a motive for the stabbing. They are still investigating, and ask anyone who may have information to call them at (802) 773-1816.
