Leahy Says Mukasey Will Be Confirmed, Will Work With Him Despite Differences

Washington, D.C. - November 5, 2007

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy says Judge Michael Mukasey will be confirmed as the next attorney general of the United States even though he won't be voting for him.

Senator Leahy initially supported President Bush's pick for attorney general, but changed his mind after the retired judge came under fire for not being able to say whether he thinks "waterboarding" is torture.

"I told him that even though I disagree with him on waterboarding I'd work with him," Leahy said. "He said he wanted to do that. We exchanged phone numbers and private phone numbers and he said he hopes we'll be in touch almost every week."

Senator Leahy says President Bush should move quickly to assign assistants to Mukasey.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on his nomination on Tuesday, and a confirmation from the full Senate is expected to follow.
