Vermont had its first confirmed sighting of a Canada lynx in almost 40 years earlier this year in Derby. The Vt. Fish & Wildlife Dept. says a farmer protecting his farm animals from a predator mistakenly shot the lynx.
It was the first confirmed sighting in Vermont since 1968.
Earlier this year, biologists announced they had evidence of the lynx in the Northeast Kingdom. In February, they released a picture of a paw print made by a Canada lynx. It was taken in a state wildlife management area in Essex County.
The Canada lynx is federally listed as a threatened species and listed by Vermont as endangered.
Lynx look like bobcats, but with bigger feet to help them walk on snow, tufts of hair on the tips of their ears, and black-tipped tails.
