Essex, Vermont - December 26, 2007
A year after a shooting at Essex Elementary, the school is easing up on some of its security measures.
Two teachers were shot inside the school during the summer of 2006. One died, the other survived.
Following the shooting, a new keyless lock system was installed at the school's main entrance.
When teachers and students return after the holiday break, they won't need to punch in to get into the building. School superintendent Jim Fitzpatrick said there is no reason to believe the school needs to be locked on a daily basis so the keypad will no longer be used.
