Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, endorsed Barack Obama for president on Thursday.

The Illinois Senator is in a tight two-way race with New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the democratic presidential nomination. Obama won the Iowa caucuses, then narrowly lost the New Hampshire primary to Clinton.

Leahy says Obama should be president because he can improve our nation's standing in the world.

"I believe that the next president has to reintroduce America to the rest of the world... in some ways has to reintroduce our country to ourselves," said Leahy. "I believe (Obama) can do that. I feel strongly that way. I'm not making the endorsement as being opposed to anybody else, but I've thought about this long and hard, and I feel he is the one who do it the best."

Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, also endorsed Obama for president Thursday. He said the Illinois Senator has brought new energy into the political process.
