Moose Meanders Through Cities

Burlington, Vermont - April 22, 2008

A police chase that started in Burlington has moved to South Burlington-- and the suspect has four leg, not four wheels.

Police began tracking a moose just before 7:00 a.m. in Burlington's Hill section near Champlain College. It ventured down Main Street at one point. Police closed roads and used air horns to divert the moose away from traffic. It ventured through several neighborhoods in Burlington and South Burlington and was quite a sight for residents.

"Kind of surprised a little, wasn't worried, surprised, they're pretty harmless," said Joe Solomon, who watched the moose run through his yard.

Later in the night, he took a stroll through downtown Burlington, attracting a crowd wherever he went. Police did their best to herd the moose away from onlookers and traffic, but it's not every day that people get the chance to see a moose up close.

The wild visitor certainly surprised Burlington resident, Andy Peters. "I was enjoying a half-price burger at Smoke Jacks and someone said, 'Oh, there's a horse,' and so we looked towards the south end of Church Street and the moose came right up Main Street and onto Church Street like it knew what it was doing, and then three or four cop cars started following it," he said.

Over the course of the day, the four-legged visitor was seen in different neighborhoods in Burlington and South Burlington, even paying a visit to the Channel 3 studios at about 7 p.m.
