Police Investigate Counterfeit Checks, Internet Scam

South Burlington, Vermont - July 9, 2008

South Burlington police are investigating a counterfeit check operation that also involved an internet scam.

They say an unidentified resident of South Burlington tried to deposit a large sum of cash into his checking account. Credit Union employees quickly suspected that the $100 bills were counterfeit. Police then determined that the person trying to make the deposit was involved in an internet scam and was processing fraudulent checks to scam innocent people of money.

Police searched a home in South Burlington and seized nearly half a million dollars worth of counterfeit checks. They haven't told us who was involved or where, but they warned several thousand dollars in counterfeit checks had already been sent out to innocent victims.
