A Massachusetts man is under arrest after police say he attempted to kidnap his ex-girlfriend and beat her until she blacked out.

Scott Kastner, 25, was arrested Wednesday night-- nearly two weeks after police say he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Winooski and tried to abduct her.

"He clearly entered the house without permission. He went straight to the victim, repeatedly assaulted her until she lost consciousness, he then grabs her by the hair and tries to drag her out of the house to a waiting car," said Rosemary Gretkowski, Chittenden Deputy Prosecutor.

Police say the abduction ended when two girlfriends of the victim jumped on Kastner and he sped off in his car with a new girlfriend.

Kastner was a fugitive until police learned he had checked himself into Fletcher Allen Health Care. When he checked out Wednesday night he was arrested.

Court records show Kastner has a lengthy record in Massachusetts, which includes convictions for rape, drug dealing, and armed assault.

The judge ordered him held without bail. The new charges carry a potential life sentence.
