Jack Thurston joined the Channel 3 News team in the summer of 2002. He graduated from Middlebury College.
You can most frequently see Jack contributing feature stories to Channel 3's newscasts. He says he most enjoys covering local arts & entertainment, and calls Phish's 2004 farewell festival in Coventry his most challenging assignment.
In 2007, Jack won an Edward R. Murrow award for "Best News Feature" for small stations in New England. That story followed a priest from Irasburg as he traded his robes for a crash helmet to compete in his first-ever demolition derby.
Also in 2007, the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association awarded Jack its Seigenthaler prize for excellence in local television. That award honored an in-depth profile of Vermont artist Alison Bechdel, creator of the long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch out For.
In 2006, Jack won another regional Murrow award in the category of "Best News Series" for his weekly "Made in Vermont" stories. They spotlight interesting small businesses and craftspeople who create products of their own design in the Green Mountain State. Those stories air each Friday day on the Channel 3 News. In 2008, Vermont Business Magazine and the United States Small Business Administration's Vermont office honored Thurston as "small business journalist of the year," for his attention to the state's vibrant homegrown business community.
