MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Democrats have nominated Rep. Shap Smith of Morrisville as speaker of the Vermont House.
Smith was the sole candidate for the nomination, after two others dropped out this week.
Rep. Steve Adams of Hartland, the Republican leader, also is running for speaker. But he is expected to face tough odds, given that his party holds just 48 of the 150 seats in the House.
On Saturday, the Democratic caucus also elected Rep. Floyd Nease of Johnson as majority leader and Rep. Lucy Leriche of Hardwick as assistant majority leader.
