Town and state officials met in Hinesburg Wednesday to discuss the future of the Saputo cheese factory.
So far, Saputo has not said the plant is for sale but town officials say the company is moving equipment out of the facility.
The plant was destroyed by a fire in September, leaving 80 workers jobless.
The property is worth about $2.5 million.
"The purpose of a meeting like this is to meet the various stockholders and partners. It's not our role as resource providers to dictate to a community what they should do," said Dave Robinson, USDA Rural Development Director.
Community members and town leaders have expressed several ideas for the site-- everything from business incubators to an assisted living facility.
