South Burlington, Vermont - January 22, 2009
Pink slips continue to be handed out at GE Healthcare in South Burlington.
This is the second round of layoffs there in the last two weeks. The company is one of the state's largest employers-- with about 700 workers.
The company isn't disclosing exactly how many workers lost their jobs, but says it was fewer than 70 people, less than 10 percent of the work force.
In a written statement the company said, "There is overall weakness in the healthcare markets. Additionally, governments, insurance companies and state legislatures are reducing the amount spent on hospital procedures."
GE employs 47,000 people in five states. Workers at all of the company's facilities are facing cuts. Layoffs started in December and will continue through the month.
GE says there are no plans to close the South Burlington facility. We spoke with several GE employees Thursday who fear more cuts are will be announced in the coming days but the company isn't confirming that.
