Channel 3 Nominated for GLAAD Award

Burlington, Vermont - January 29, 2009

A Channel 3 News series has been nominated for an award by GLAAD-- the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The series called Becoming ran in November 2008. It was written and produced by Darren Perron.

The multi-part series looked at Vermont's transgender community, the state's anti-discrimination law, sexual reassignment surgery, and the internal struggle that comes with being transgender.

It was nominated in the Outstanding TV Journalism category for the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

WCAX is the only local television station nominated in any category. The other nominees are national network including CBS, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, PBS, the Oprah Winfrey show and CNN.

The GLAAD Awards will be divided between three ceremonies; March 28, 2009 in New York City, April 18 in Los Angeles, and May 9 in San Francisco. Darren finds out if he wins on May 9.
