Economy Clips Cupid's Wings?

Burlington, Vermont - February 10, 2009

At the Village Green Florist in Essex Junction, designers are working long hours. Valentine's Day is their day to shine. But they worry more people will cut back this year.

A new survey for the National Retail Federation shows the average consumer will spend just over $100 on their loved one, down about 20 bucks from last year.

So Village Green says your local florist can suggest cheaper alternatives to roses. Plus, picking up arrangements yourself avoids a delivery fee and a charge for the vase if you want to save on a romantic gift.

"That's what we're here for, to pass that message along and hopefully get a hug and kiss on the other side," said Jen Mikell of Village Green.

At L'Amante in downtown Burlington, they're all booked for February 14th. But the upscale Italian restaurant is still expecting those diners will be watching their wallets. They've seen more people sharing entrees, or opting for smaller portions, sometimes making an appetizer into a meal.

Kathi Cleary of L'Amante explained, "If they're going to spend their money, they want the quality there, so everyone has to step up their game."

Jewelers typically get a boost from Valentine's Day, too -- but as other retailers are, Designers' Circle Jewelers is seeing more restrained spending. Shoppers are giving silver a look this season whereas they may have bought gold in the past. More affordable gemstones like citrine or peridot are doing better than diamonds or rubies.

"There are many, many opportunities at finding something nice and not breaking the bank, but still expressing something. And that something's obviously love," said Dave Sisco of Designers' Circle.

The Retail Federation survey indicated that more people planned to send a simple card this Valentine's Day. Of course, simply saying 'I love you' doesn't cost anything.
