Burlington, Vermont - February 11, 2009
The Vermont Health Department is reporting that one person has been hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease.
The health department is not releasing any details about this case saying it is an isolated case and the public is not at risk. However, the department says it does investigate about eight cases of Legionnaires' disease a year. The disease often starts with flu like symptoms and a fever.
"Fevers can get quite high, higher than we generally see in flu; it can go up to 105... a cough, body aches, diarrhea sometimes, and with Legionnaires' disease the classic symptom is pneumonia. Right now, we're in flu season in Vermont and flu has fever, cough and there are other respiratory infections that have some of the same symptoms," said Susan Schoenfeld of the Vt. Health Dept.
Health officials say if anyone experiences any of those symptoms they should contact their doctor.
