State Police to Investigate Shelburne Shooting

Shelburne, Vermont - February 14, 2009

A Burlington man who allegedly assaulted a police officer with his car remains hospitalized after being shot by the officer Friday night.

Police say 45-year-old Kelly O'Brien was driving erratically on Route 7, when he pulled into the Jiffy Mart Parking lot. Police say O'Brien allegedly drove his car at Shelburne Officer Robert Barrows, prompting the officer to shoot. O'Brien then allegedly hit another vehicle in the process of fleeing the scene. He was taken into custody and hospitalized with a gunshot wound in the torso. He was reported in fair condition Saturday and will face charges when he is released from the hospital.

Officer Barrows was treated and released for minor injuries associated with being hit by the car.

The shooting will be investigated by the Vermont State Police.
