Shelburne, Vermont - February 16, 2009

New details have emerged about a police shooting in Shelburne.

Investigators say the man shot by police last Friday, 45-year-old Kelly O'Brien, of Burlington, was hit in the back. He's currently hospitalized in fair condition from the shot fired by Shelburne Officer Robert Barrows.

Police say Barrows fired as O'Brien drove his car at the officer -- and again as O'Brien drove by him. One of the shots hit O'Brien in the back. O'Brien then collided with a car on Route 7, and came to a stop just down the road, where he was arrested.

Records show O'Brien has an extensive criminal history, including a conviction for assaulting a Burlington police officer in 2005.

In this case, O'Brien is charged with attempted aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude.
