New York State released unemployment numbers for January and they're terrible across the state including the North Country.
Clinton, Franklin and Essex Counties shed 1,700 private sector jobs last month bringing the regional unemployment rate to 10.6 percent. That's three points higher than January 2008 and the highest rate in a decade.
The Labor Department says it is taking immediate action by hitting the road to help New Yorkers look for work.
"A key part of what we're rolling out today is what we're calling Traveling One-Stop Career Centers. The Department of Labor will be working with local community groups and organizations to bring One-Stop services to more communities, rural communities that people don't have to travel great distances to get these services, we're gonna set these up with local libraries, community centers, VFW halls and many such locations," said Nancy Dunphy, the deputy commissioner of the N.Y. Labor Department.
The state is also deploying what it calls Labor on Wheels-- a vehicle that will travel to rural communities to offer more of those one stop services.
