The search for a missing boy from Washington County, New York continued on Saturday, three weeks after he disappeared under what police are calling suspicious circumstances. The search brought investigators to Vermont this week.
New York Forest Rangers relied on an air boat to get a closer look at a portion of the Batten Kill just downstream from the Village of Greenwich. But three weeks into the search and there's been no sign of 12-year old Jaliek Rainwalker. "What we wanted to do was cover sections of river that haven't yet been physically looked at from the water. The Batten Kill itself has been flown a couple of times with the helicopter. But part of our standard procedure for conducting a search, we need to physically check the river," said Mike Bodnar, the New York Forest Ranger in charge of Saturday's search.
Jaliek Rainwalker may be wearing a yellow fleece pullover, a gray T-shirt with a dragon on the front and blue jeans. The police chief in Greenwich said he suspected foul play. The boy has been through several foster homes. His step father reportedly refused to take a lie detector test.
The search included a privately-owned recreation area, the Merck Forest in Rupert, Vermont, about twenty miles east of Greenwich. The boy's latest adoptive family was said to have spent time there. But the search turned up no trace. "The idea behind that came from the police department," Bodnar explained. "And they asked us to take a look at some things, so that's what we did."
Greenwich police have coordinated the investigation into the boy's disappearance, and considerable effort has been put into the investigation by New York State police and New York Forest Rangers. Officials now say they will decide next week where to focus the investigation into the disappearance of Jaliek Rainwalker.
