Craig Ferguson managed to keep his December 21st marriage a secret to most, until announcing it on Monday night's Late Late Show. Displaying his wedding ring for the TV cameras, he beamed, "I got married!!"
The CBS comedian married art dealer Megan Wallace Cunningham on her parents' Southern Vermont farm. Channel 3 obtained a copy of the couple's marriage license issued in Chester. It shows Beverly Hills addresses for bride and groom, and lists Chester lawyer Patricia Benelli as the officiant.
Benelli told us she was named an acting judge so she could preside over this ceremony, but wouldn't say anything else, respecting the couple's privacy.
Ferguson, though, joked about the marriage in a really public way. He told his audience, "The wedding was in Vermont. They have legalized gay civil unions, and I married a woman! But I am European, so I was the groom and the maid of honor."
The Scotland native recently became a United States citizen and has talked before about how much he enjoys visiting Vermont. He even named his production company Green Mountain West.
Wedding expert Judy Robinson says of Vermont weddings, "[They're] all breathtakingly beautiful."
Judy Robinson works for Vermont Vows, a magazine that connects couples with wedding vendors and experts. She says the state is a top destination for weddings, mostly because of the scenery.
But for celebrities, Vermont offers something else. Robinson explains, "I'm sure part of the allure was that he could do it in private. The planning and execution of it all could be done in a very private manner, and the setting could be private."
This is Ferguson's third marriage and he's hoping the third time's a charm. A good sense of humor should certainly help.
He chuckled on his TV show, "Now that I'm married, I'll be the same Craig Ferguson. I'll just be apologizing more!"
