Burlington residents targeted by phone scam

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Burlington Police are warning people about a phone scam.

Police say residents have been getting calls from someone claiming they are cops trying to collect money on back taxes. The scammers say they will be "freezing assets" until the taxes are paid. The crooks use caller ID spoofing to make it look like the calls are coming from the Burlington Police Department's main phone number, 802-658-2700.

"Police spend your tax dollars we don't collect them," Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo said. "Unless you call us to pay a parking ticket or something."

If you receive a suspicious call, contact police.
