Congressional delegations urge USDA to help dairy farmers

WASHINGTON (WCAX) Vermont and New Hampshire's congressional delegations are among a group of lawmakers urging USDA officials to help dairy farmers in need.

In a letter Wednesday, the group urged U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue to make milk an eligible commodity under the Federal Crop Insurance Program, which insures farmers for various crops. They say existing safeguards, including the Margin Protection Program, have failed to provide farmers with adequate support.

They say dairy farmers across the region are struggling with prices that have dropped almost 40 percent in the last few years.
