MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) An eight-unit apartment building caught fire Tuesday morning in Montpelier.

The Montpelier Fire Department and seven nearby departments battled the blaze in subzero temperatures. Firefighters say everyone escaped the building, but a pet bird died and one cat is missing. They also say the building has been renovated several times, leaving gaps between the walls. Firefighters knocked down some walls to put the fire out.

"I opened the front door and the smoke was clear to the floor and to the ceiling. We talked to a management person who said he was working in the basement so he took me around back to the basement and there was a fire in the basement all the way across," said Montpelier Fire Lt. Dana Houppi.

The cause is still being investigated. Firefighters say a maintenance person was working on frozen pipes when the fire broke out.
