East Poultney man sentenced for murder of mother

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) A man who killed his mother because he thought she was possessed by the devil has been sentenced to prison.

Roderick Geronimo pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a deal with prosecutors.The East Poultney man told police he attacked and killed his 82-year-old mother Gertrudes Alwardt in 2012.

Police say he pushed a table into her and hit her over the head with wine decanters before pouring water into her mouth to "cast the devil out."

In court Tuesday Geronimo said no one was more sorry for her loss than he was.

The judge sentenced him to serve a minimum of eight years in prison. He already served five years behind bars.
