Former Vt. trooper faces environmental fines for illegal burn

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) A former Vermont state trooper disciplined for illegally burning down an A-frame on his Stannard property last year now faces environmental fines.

Stephen McGranaghan resigned from the state police in January following the allegations that he and another trooper burned down the A-frame. McGranaghan had a permit to burn brush on his property but not the building.

Wednesday, DEC officials fined McGranaghan $10,760 for the fire. Investigators found that McGranaghan violated air pollution laws because the structure included vinyl siding, asphalt roofing, plywood, painted and treated wood, and several tires.
