Grants to offset City Place disruptions, hold job fairs

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The city of Burlington is seeking ideas to help businesses impacted by the construction of City Place.

Local stores and restaurants voiced their concerns to the city about how construction could impact their bottom lines, so the Community and Economic Development Office will use a $100,000 grant from City Place developers to improve lighting and signs along sidewalks, create interactive maps directing visitors to parking, and run job fairs to help businesses with hiring.

"We're not closing down--none of the streets. We are open for business, but there is going to be some disruption. There is going to be noise, there is going to be truck traffic, so there were some concerns about that. So we want businesses to think differently about their current and future needs," said Noelle MacKay, CEDO's Director.

CEDO also received another $65,000 grant from the state to train construction workers to help build City Place. That grant will target women, veterans and new Americans.
