BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Any business owner will tell you it's no easy task to get started, and the application process tends to be one of the biggest challenges. But now it's a little easier for interested business owners to set up shop in Burlington.
Nearly 1,500 businesses call the Queen City their home. One of those businesses is Butch and Babe's, an American-style restaurant in the Old North End.
Kortnee Bush opened her doors nearly three years ago when the process of doing so was a lot more challenging.
"I kind of felt like I was going into the unknown," said Bush.
"Up until this point, somebody would have to contact each department individually or go to the individual website to find a permit application," said Diana Colangelo, a former employee of the Community and Economic Development Office of Burlington.
Colangelo says they often heard from business owners that the application process was confusing. Bush says she needed dozens of permits, which caused back and forth trips to several departments.
"Now it's all in one place," said Colangelo.
Earlier this month, the city launched a website called "Startup in a Day." It's designed to make it easier for entrepreneurs to apply for city permits and find helpful resources.
"It helps people understand what permits they need," said Colangelo.
Entrepreneurs specify their business type and then are given a customized list of permits they'll need to start their business.
"I think it would have made me a little less anxious because I would have had this list to make sure all of my ducks were in a row," Bush said.
