Blue-green algae closes Burlington's North Beach

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) There was no relief from the heat Monday for beachgoers in Burlington. The city's Parks and Recreation Department closed North Beach, citing a blue-green algae bloom.

State health authorities warn residents to stay aware of bacteria levels this week as the unusually warn weather continues.

Leddy Park, Texaco Beach and Starr Farm Beach in Burlington also have high amounts of the toxin-producing cyanobacteria, and you should not go in the water because it could make you sick.

Also added to the high alert list over the weekend were Charlotte Town Beach in Charlotte, Button Bay in Ferrisburgh, Burgey Farm Road in Addison and Pelots Bay in North Hero.

Those beaches join nearly half a dozen locations in the Franklin County area that have been on high alert for the past month.
