Parents of child suffering seizures sue over EMS coverage

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) The parents of a 2-year-old Vermont boy who suffers from seizures and respiratory problems are suing Montpelier and East Montpelier over disagreements about emergency medical coverage.

The Times Argus reports Jeremy and Erika Smith, of East Montpelier, say in a lawsuit that both communities failed to agree on a 911 response system, despite a mutual aid agreement between them.

The Smiths want to be able to call Montpelier emergency services instead of East Montpelier services. They say Montpelier EMS is closer to the couple's East Montpelier home.

Erika Smith says East Montpelier emergency officials refused to enter an agreement with Montpelier.

Both Montpelier City Manager Bill Fraser and East Montpelier Town Manager Bruce Johnson declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
