BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The University of Vermont and St. Michael's College are taking steps to stop the spread of mumps on campus.

In a letter sent out to students and staff, UVM says the health lab is waiting for the results for five possible mumps cases involving undergraduates. Three cases have already been confirmed at St. Michael's College.

Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus that affects the salivary glands.

The schools are asking all students who are having symptoms to visit student health services.
