SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Are you feeling lucky? That's the question many people are asking as Wednesday night's jackpot for the Powerball lottery drawing is now the second largest in U.S. history.
Matching all six balls will win you $700 million, which is a large enough sum of money that many people were snatching up tickets despite the nearly impossible odds. The chances of winning are just 1 in 292 million.
At the Jiffy Mart on Kennedy Drive in South Burlington, sales Wednesday morning were brisk. "You have people playing who normally would never buy a ticket. By the end of the day, it'll be 10, 15, 20 times as many sales as normal. We were selling tickets at 6:15 this morning, and they'll sell right up until the drawing," said the store's Michael Lecours.
If no one matches the numbers, the jackpot will keep growing, possibly surpassing the current record Powerball jackpot of $1.6 billion.
