BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A new study finds more pregnant women are hooked on opioids than ever before, and Vermont is at the top of the list of states where it's happening.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studied delivery rooms in 28 states. Thursday, it revealed the number of women dependent on or abusing opioids more than quadrupled between 1999 and 2014. That translates to nearly 25,000 deliveries across all 50 states that year. Those rates were highest in Vermont and West Virginia.
Opioid use during pregnancy can cause death of the mother or baby, preterm birth and infant withdrawal symptoms.
