Search and rescue officials urge caution with change of seasons

WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) Vermont State Police are warning hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts to be mindful of the change in seasons and to be safe on the trail.

Officials say several search and rescue incidents, including two in southern Vermont this past weekend, involved hikers who were not prepared. They say two different hiking parties in Dorset and Pownal got lost and needed to be rescued because they failed to bring headlamps.

Officials say weather conditions at higher elevations can often be very different than what is encountered at the trail head and hikers should be prepared for icy trails and the dangers of hypothermia.
