BENSON, Vt. (WCAX) State wildlife officials say a land deal has added nearly 50 acres of lakeshore to a state wildlife management area in Benson.

The addition to the Pond Woods Wildlife Management Area was sold to the state for $356,000 by the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts earlier this fall.

Officials say the area is prime habitat for deer and other animals, and that Its location is an important migration corridor between the Adirondacks and Green Mountains. Sunset Lake also holds the record for water clarity of any water body in the state.

The area will be permanently conserved for public recreation including bird-watching, hiking, fishing, and hunting.

It was purchased with funding from conservation stamps as well as federal and other state conservation groups.
