BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A new study found more pregnant women in California are using marijuana to soothe morning sickness and anxiety.
Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found a slight rise in marijuana use by pregnant women in California, climbing from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent from 2009 through 2016.
The number of pregnant moms younger than 18 using marijuana rose from 12.5 percent to almost 22 percent.
Doctors caution pregnant women who use pot saying the health effects on fetuses remain unclear but include low birth weight and developmental problems.
One expert speculated the rise might be partially explained by the increased availability of legal marijuana in recent years.
