Vermont trooper resigns following illegal fire

WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) A Vermont State trooper has resigned after an illegal fire.

It happened on Stannard Mountain Road in Stannard Dec. 4.

State police say former trooper Stephen McGranaghan and Trooper Jason Haley illegally burned a structure McGranaghan owned on his own property. McGranaghan had a permit to burn brush on his property but not the A-frame building they burned.

The Vermont attorney general recommended administrative action and the Agency of Natural Resources is also looking into it.

McGranaghan handed in his resignation Friday. Trooper Haley will be back on the job after an internal investigation wraps up.
