MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont State Ethics Commission has hired an executive director.

Stowe attorney Brian Leven was chosen by the five-member panel earlier this month. Chairwoman Madeline Motta says his experience made him the top candidate out of three finalists for the job. Leven previously worked for twelve years as an attorney for the Vermont Legislative Council and served as deputy secretary of state until 2015.

The 5-member commission was established by the legislature this spring. It will review cases of alleged unethical behavior by politicians and candidates. It would have the power to send cases to the Attorney General's office. Until now, Vermont was one of only a handful of states with no ethics commission.

The commission launches January 1.
